Choose your electricity provider freely and benefit from time-of-use tariffs. Purchase electricity at low prices and use it efficiently with your FEMS-managed energy storage system. The FEMS App “Time-of-use tariff” analyzes market prices and predicts favorable times to buy electricity, based on your daily energy usage, to charge your system!
Whether you are looking for an energy storage system for your own home, our you are an electrician who would like to work with FENECON systems: If you require more information on time-of-use tariffs, feel free to contact our experts.
Dynamic electricity tariffs allow you to purchase electricity at varying prices based on supply and demand. This is particularly important when the generation from your own PV system is insufficient or unavailable. Market electricity prices are often low at night when most people are asleep or during the day when many photovoltaic systems are generating power. Prices also drop during strong winds when wind turbines generate a lot of electricity, providing you with additional savings opportunities. In times of high generation, prices can even become negative.
To make the most of these benefits, use the FENECON energy storage system in combination with our FEMS Dynamic Electricity Tariff app. The app uses artificial intelligence to analyze both electricity prices and your personal energy consumption behavior. It continuously learns from your usage data to determine the best time to charge your storage system. This way, you maximize your savings while actively contributing to the energy transition.
“After the intelligent FENECON energy storage system, this is the next step on my Energy Journey. The FEMS App “Time-of-use tariff” saves me even more money as I benefit from variable electricity prices (the average price over the past 11 months was 0.21 €/kWh). It also helps relieve the grid even further.”

“It’s exciting to track the benefits of the dynamic electricity tariff directly in the app. I was particularly impressed by the high savings potential. A real highlight is the ‘Active Charging’ of the storage system during cheaper times, avoiding grid consumption during expensive peak hours.”

“The dynamic electricity prices combined with the energy storage system allow us to take advantage of low electricity prices during sunless periods. The system adapts perfectly to our consumption and charges the storage to the required level at the optimal price point. So far, it works very well, and we are extremely satisfied with the FENECON system!”

Time-of-use tariffs offer electricity prices that vary according to supply and demand on the energy market. At night, or at times of high electricity production, prices may drop significantly.
Buying electricity when supply is high or demand is low will have a significant impact on your energy costs. Households will benefit most when this pricing model is combined with battery-based energy storage systems that are charged when prices are low and are discharged when prices are high.
A potential risk is that prices may surge at certain times, leading to higher costs if consumers are not prepared. However, the majority of consumers pays lower average electricity prices compared to fixed-price tariffs, especially when combined with an energy storage system. Therefore it is recommended to use intelligent energy management or electricity trading software to monitor prices and use the full advantages of time-of-use-tariffs.
As of 1 January 2025, all providers in Germany are obliged to offer time-of-use tariffs.
Although the current release of the FEMS App “Time-of-use tariff” cannot control EV charging yet, the data collected from compatible EV charging equipment is processed in the consumption forecast. We thus recommend using a compatible charging station and the corresponding app.
The same applies to heating elements: The current release does not yet control the heating element, but the measured data is already processed for the consumption forecast.
Software: FEMS App “Time-of-use tariff” and a corresponding electricity contract with a provider of your choice.
Hardware: A suitable electricity meter for using time-of-use tariffs on an hourly basis is required. An analog Ferraris disk meter does not suffice. Instead, a digital electricity meter is a minimum requirement. The digital meter needs to be upgraded so your electricity provider can allocate prices and times to your consumption.
Generally, time-of-use tariffs are combined with Smart Meters that also feature a communication module (“smart meter gateway”). Some providers of time-of-use tariffs will take the initiative and also provide you with a Smart Meter, or you might have to request one from your provider. As an alternative and/or gateway technology, Tibber offers the Pulse electricity sensor. However, it only transfers real-time data to your app, not to the grid operator.
Manual settings like a price threshold often do not reach far enough and contradict our goal of developing a fully-automated app users can trust.
We harness the experiences gathered through BETA testing with various system configurations, production & consumption profiles at all seasons to further update and optimize our app (e. g. efficient battery charging from only one DC-connected PV system).
The FEMS App “Time-of-use tariff” is compatible with all electricity providers. FENECON’s goal in the development of this app is and always has been that customers can freely choose their electricity provider.
You can easily change your provider at any time. At the date your new contract starts, simply uninstall the old app and install the one from your new provider free of charge.
