Dyna­mic elec­tri­ci­ty tariffs allow you to purcha­se elec­tri­ci­ty at vary­ing pri­ces based on sup­p­ly and demand. This is par­ti­cu­lar­ly important when the gene­ra­ti­on from your own PV sys­tem is insuf­fi­ci­ent or unavailable. Mar­ket elec­tri­ci­ty pri­ces are often low at night when most peo­p­le are asleep or during the day when many pho­to­vol­taic sys­tems are gene­ra­ting power. Pri­ces also drop during strong winds when wind tur­bi­nes gene­ra­te a lot of elec­tri­ci­ty, pro­vi­ding you with addi­tio­nal savings oppor­tu­ni­ties. In times of high gene­ra­ti­on, pri­ces can even beco­me negative.

FAQ on time-of-use tariffs

Time-of-use tariffs offer elec­tri­ci­ty pri­ces that vary accor­ding to sup­p­ly and demand on the ener­gy mar­ket. At night, or at times of high elec­tri­ci­ty  pro­duc­tion, pri­ces may drop significantly.

Buy­ing elec­tri­ci­ty when sup­p­ly is high or demand is low will have a signi­fi­cant impact on your ener­gy cos­ts. House­holds will bene­fit most when this pri­cing model is com­bi­ned with bat­tery-based ener­gy sto­rage sys­tems that are char­ged when pri­ces are low and are dischar­ged when pri­ces are high.

A poten­ti­al risk is that pri­ces may sur­ge at cer­tain times, lea­ding to hig­her cos­ts if con­su­mers are not pre­pared. Howe­ver, the majo­ri­ty of con­su­mers pays lower avera­ge elec­tri­ci­ty pri­ces com­pared to fixed-pri­ce tariffs, espe­ci­al­ly when com­bi­ned with an ener­gy sto­rage sys­tem. The­r­e­fo­re it is recom­men­ded to use intel­li­gent ener­gy manage­ment or elec­tri­ci­ty tra­ding soft­ware to moni­tor pri­ces and use the full advan­ta­ges of time-of-use-tariffs.

As of 1 Janu­ary 2025, all pro­vi­ders in Ger­ma­ny are obli­ged to offer time-of-use tariffs.

FEMS App FAQ

Alt­hough the cur­rent release of the FEMS App “Time-of-use tariff” can­not con­trol EV char­ging yet, the data coll­ec­ted from com­pa­ti­ble EV char­ging equip­ment is pro­ces­sed in the con­sump­ti­on fore­cast. We thus recom­mend using a com­pa­ti­ble char­ging sta­ti­on and the cor­re­spon­ding app.
The same appli­es to hea­ting ele­ments: The cur­rent release does not yet con­trol the hea­ting ele­ment, but the mea­su­red data is alre­a­dy pro­ces­sed for the con­sump­ti­on forecast.

Soft­ware: FEMS App “Time-of-use tariff” and a cor­re­spon­ding elec­tri­ci­ty con­tract with a pro­vi­der of your choice.

Hard­ware: A sui­ta­ble elec­tri­ci­ty meter for using time-of-use tariffs on an hour­ly basis is requi­red. An ana­log Fer­ra­ris disk meter does not suf­fice. Ins­tead, a digi­tal elec­tri­ci­ty meter is a mini­mum requi­re­ment. The digi­tal meter needs to be upgraded so your elec­tri­ci­ty pro­vi­der can allo­ca­te pri­ces and times to your con­sump­ti­on.
Gene­ral­ly, time-of-use tariffs are com­bi­ned with Smart Meters that also fea­ture a com­mu­ni­ca­ti­on modu­le (“smart meter gate­way”). Some pro­vi­ders of time-of-use tariffs will take the initia­ti­ve and also pro­vi­de you with a Smart Meter, or you might have to request one from your pro­vi­der. As an alter­na­ti­ve and/or gate­way tech­no­lo­gy, Tib­ber offers the Pul­se elec­tri­ci­ty sen­sor. Howe­ver, it only trans­fers real-time data to your app, not to the grid operator.

Manu­al set­tings like a pri­ce thres­hold often do not reach far enough and con­tra­dict our goal of deve­lo­ping a ful­ly-auto­ma­ted app users can trust.
We harness the expe­ri­en­ces gathe­red through BETA test­ing with various sys­tem con­fi­gu­ra­ti­ons, pro­duc­tion & con­sump­ti­on pro­files at all sea­sons to fur­ther update and opti­mi­ze our app (e. g. effi­ci­ent bat­tery char­ging from only one DC-con­nec­ted PV system).

The FEMS App “Time-of-use tariff” is com­pa­ti­ble with all elec­tri­ci­ty pro­vi­ders. FENECON’s goal in the deve­lo­p­ment of this app is and always has been that cus­to­mers can free­ly choo­se their elec­tri­ci­ty provider.

You can easi­ly chan­ge your pro­vi­der at any time. At the date your new con­tract starts, sim­ply unin­stall the old app and install the one from your new pro­vi­der free of charge.
